Pascoe Cup (first grade) has seen Junee finish as minor premiers/league champions while Gardiner Shield (reserve grade) finish the season at fourth spot.
Blake Trophy (third grade) finish in fourth spot but over the past few weeks have accounted for all teams above on the ladder which will make a few people a bit nervous.
Leonard Cup (womens first grade) has seen Junee finish second, one point behind top spot, while for the second year, Madden Trophy has finished on top of the ladder and are minor premiers/league champions.
LEONARD CUP
JUNEE’S Leonard Cup team met top spot Henwood Park last Sunday at Burns Park Junee and came away with a solid 3-0 result.
The game was very fast and frenetic with both sides battling hard to gain dominance.
Both teams displayed some brilliant attack coupled with equally brilliant defence that kept supporters on the edge of their seats.
A good ball out of defence put Junee into a strong attacking position and Abby Foley volleyed her shot over the keeper into the net at the 13th minute mark to take Junee to a 1-0 lead.
Further good work a few minutes later saw a neat chip by Nicole Tinnock beat the keeper but found the cross-bar and the chance rebounded back into play and out of danger.
Junee kept the pressure on and continued to press at every opportunity and a strike by Liv Howell found the net in the 27th minute.
The ball was struck sweetly and beat the keeper with placement and power.
The lead to Junee was 2-0 and stayed that way into the second half.
At the 51st minute another strike from Liv Howell found the net and took Junee to 3-0 lead.
The work off the ball by Junee was exceptional and with the input of several players to the attack, Junee was able to keep pressing the Hawks’ goal.
Stout defence was a highlight from both teams and as the game wore on, the match opened up and there was plenty of space offered by both teams but n o further goals were scored.
Junee’s defence, particularly goalkeeper Sara Smart was incredible.
Smart kept another clean sheet and has had six clean-sheets over 12 games she has played and conceded only eight goals all season, plus scored two goals.
Her contribution to the success of the team was very evident on Sunday and she was the Best and Fairest Award for her efforts.
The game was excellent to watch and Junee kept the pressure on for the entire game and the whole team combined well and worked tirelessly to achieve a great result.
Best for Junee in a total team performance was Sara Smart, Olivia Howell, Abby Foley and Abby Duncan.
Junee will meet Henwood Park again next Sunday in the major semi-final at Rawlings Park at 11am and it should be a cracker of a game between two very good squads.
MADDEN TROPHY
JUNEE’S Madden Trophy team put in a great performance last Sunday against Henwood Park to take a 10-0 result into next week’s semi finals.
Junee had to work very hard to contain the Hawks young guns who pressed and pressured the Junee defence relentlessly.
Junee scored three goals in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net on many other occasions.
Taylah Howell (10th), Kara Hancock (19th) and Elisha Ward (33rd minute) were working well out of mid-field and kept the Hawks scrambling.
The second half saw the game open up with the loss of a player by the Hawks to a foot injury and Junee then steam-rolled their opponents scoring a further seven goals in the second stanza.
Goals went to Kara Hancock who finished with three, Taylah Howell who finished with two, Elisha Ward who finished with four and Sara Smart who scored one.
It was a good effort by the team and will remind them of what they are capable of doing when they apply their skills.
All the numbers show Junee has been improving all over the park with possession increasing, shots on goal percentage increasing and also in corners and crosses where there has been a huge jump and throw ins are also improving.
The effort by the players is resulting in great performances and the team is looking forward to meeting Young in the major semi final next Sunday in what should be a fantastic game.
Best for Junee on the day was Starsh Miller, Sara Smart, Kara Hancock and Elisha Ward.
