Officers tested 40 drivers in Junee across July 1 to August 11. Sergeant Bernie Nix said nine positive readings were recorded.
Sgt Nix said officers had been trained across the command and could administer the tests just as they do for random breath testing.
Mayor Neil Smith was cautious and wanted to see more data before considering it as a Junee-specific problem.
He said drivers under the influence of drugs were not just a concern for police.
“Anyone whether you’re from council or a motorist should be worried about it,” Councillor Smith said.
“I would like to see further stats to find out where we sit on the scale, and how we compare,” Cr Smith said.
He highlighted council’s drug policy of four random drug tests for staff each year.
