SBS' three-part social experiment, Go Back To Where You Came From, has ended with a studio discussion that crackled, fizzed and often threatened to erupt into outright hostility between the six participants.

Like Mitch Johnson over on the other channel, host Marc Fennell opened proceedings for The Feed with a brute of a delivery to Kim Vuga.

Labelling her "one of the most hated people in Australia", he left the diminutive Islamophobe from Townsville momentarily lost for words.

But the habitual front-foot player swiftly regained her composure and insisted she had in fact been overwhelmed by the support she had received.

That backing, she curiously insisted, even came from cancer patients.

Asked to define exactly why she was so vehemently anti-Muslim, Vuga responded sagely that "the problem with Islam is Islam itself".

One of Vuga's fellow travellers (only in a strictly literal sense - they went to Syria and Iraq together in the show) was Nicole Judge.

Judge worked on Manus Island and last year gave evidence to the Senate inquiry into the death of detainee Reza Barati​.

To Vuga, Judge is a "traitor", pure and simple, while Judge says Vuga is "completely misinformed" and "uneducated".

Bizarrely, though, the pair have kept in contact since filming finished, regularly chatting online.

But when asked by Fennell what the common ground was, Judge could only manage "We are both people".

Later, when Fennell brought in Go Back host and refugee specialist Dr David Corlett, proceedings threatened to turn into the Kim 'n' Nic Show.

"We're listening to the experts now," Judge told Vuga, only to be met with a sharp: "Stop being rude, Nicole," from the other half of the odd couple.

Melbourne teacher Andrew Jackson was one of the participants who significantly shifted is position over the course of the program. Asked to characterise his views before travelling to Syria and Iraq he said simply, "I was just a bastard".

Inevitably, it was up to Vuga to put a stop to this temporary outbreak of introspection, declaring that for her compassion ended "at Australia's borders".

The performance of the evening, however, came from Jodi Charman, who began the series as a staunch proponent of stopping the boats and preventing refugees from "invading" Australia.

But after a damascene moment in a Thai jungle when she learned about the abuse of Rohingya refugees, her views shifted 180 degrees.

Back home in Adelaide, Charman revealed she is now working to support the Rohingya community there and even helped one family find accommodation.

"They have become my closest friends and they are a beautiful family," she said. "I'm so grateful that I had this opportunity to go on and do something. To give back."
