One of the hardest hit areas was Huntingwood, where at least four sites totalling about 100,000 square metres in size will have to be rebuilt following the collapse of roofs, which were weighed down by the 10 centimetres to 20 centimetres of hail and heavy rain.

Industrial property agents said inquiries for short term leases of warehouses have already started from a range of businesses including supermarkets, car part specialists, transport and logistics and courier-style third party distributors.

One agent said, while it wasn't as widespread as the April 1999 hail storm that hit Sydney's eastern suburbs, the size of warehouses in the western areas are bigger and finding similar replacement sites will be hard.

The average price to rent in the area can vary between $200-$300 per square metre per annum, but to rebuild, with new weight-bearing roofs, is estimated to be about $600 per sqm per annum.

Goodman Group's Bungarribee Industrial Estate at Huntingwood in Sydney's west was the hardest hit with its roof collapsing.

A spokesman for Goodman confirmed that two of its facilities had been damaged, but all staff were unharmed. It is leased by Hitachi and Linfox and is about 35,000 sqm.

Costco's NSW hub at Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood, owned by Australand and previously leased to Kmart, has been hit, leaving the retailer looking for temporary digs. It is about 30,000 sqm in size and is the main centre to service its NSW retail stores.

Metcash confirmed its 82,853 sqm distribution centre at Huntingwood site, which opened three years ago, has sustained significant damage. In an ASX statement, the Metcash chief executive Ian Morrice, said, while the perishable and fresh food warehouse had minimal damage and will continue to operate, the group is supplying dry goods and liquor from distribution centres in Queensland, the ACT and Victoria, while it assesses the damage at Huntingwood.

Nearby, the company-owned Hyundai site, called Mobis​ Parts Australia, at Peter Brock Drive, Eastern Creek, of about 30,000 sqm, has sustained damage, as has the Beiersdorf​ Australia plant at Huntingwood, of about 10,000 sqm. Beiersdorf​ Australia is the manufacturer of brands including NIVEA​, Elastoplast and Elastoplast Sport, among others.

Darren Curry, the divisional director for industrial sales and leasing at Savills Australia said many buildings in the Huntingwood area had been "decimated" by the hail storm.

"It is going to be a fast take up of secondary space in western Sydney, especially as the affected buildings may have to remain vacant for some time as they get repaired," Mr Curry said.

"There are at least three tenants now looking for similar sized warehouses from the storm and will be vying for the available sites, some of which are available around Arndell Park, owned by Logos Property."

Insurance agents said it was too early to assess any costs. All the buildings were insured.
