Only a neck separated them, but it was Trevor White and Hollywood Sign who reigned supreme.
Bruce Harpley and Sokys Bigbullet had to settle for second in an equal track record mile rate of 1:58.8.
After a frenetic finish, not even White could believe he’d pulled off the win in his hometown cup for the second time.
“He went terrific the little horse,” White said.
“I didn’t think he could get home as we went so hard but he tries his heart out.”
With $1.70 favourite Business In Motion, Sokys Bigbullet ($20.70) and Hollywood Sign ($13.60) battling out for the early lead, there was no respite once Hollywood Sign found the lead.
Nathan Jack came around on Indi Bapu ($7.50) posting Temora Pacers Cup winner Modern Max three-wide in the blistering first quarter of 28.4 seconds.
However, as they straightened for the final occasion, Hollywood Sign wouldn’t be denied.
“I hadn’t pulled the earplugs when we straightened and was just hoping he had a bit left,” White said.
“I thought Bruce would have to beat me on the turn as he was breathing down my neck.
“The others were gone and I couldn’t keep him in, but the little horse dug in.”
White leases the gelding with his nephew David White and his friend Matthew Peden.
It was Trevor’s second Pacers Cup win, with the first in 1986.
It was a big night for the trainer when his horse Shes A Jackson claimed a heat of the Monster Plant Sale Drivers Invitational Drivers Challenge.
Driven by New Zealand reinsman Anthony Butt, the mare claimed the narrowest victory at $21.
