S. UPTON, COOGEE.
In Malta, the Grand Master's Palace, St John's Cathedral – don't miss the Beheading of St John the Baptist by Caravaggio – the Blue Hole and the Azure Window, Hagar Qim and Birgu are just a few of the highlights.
The south-eastern region of Sicily holds treasures from classical and baroque periods. Ragusa, Noto and Syracuse are all worth a long look. In Modica, between Pozzallo and Modica, Casa Talia (casatalia.it) consists of stone cottages renovated by Milanese architects, who have breathed new life into the rustic interiors overlooking the baroque city. As well as the above, my favourite places in Sicily are Agrigento, Erice, Monreale, Palermo, Segesta, and Cefalu. The list also includes Taormina, Etna and the Aeolian Islands, but you don't have enough time for those. See Sawdays (sawdays.co.uk) for accommodation options.
