Two self-select classes of years 7 and 8 and years 9 and 10, choose to nominate themselves to be a part of the class.

"This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn with similar peers, engaging with interesting and challenging class learning and project-based activities," principal Terry Vercoe said.

Mr Vercoe said students in the self-select class often push beyond what is expected - solving problems, investigating topics and committing themselves to their learning.

"In having all these students together in the one class, there is an atmosphere of competition and motivation, leading to greater success," he said.

"They are dedicated and driven to achieve their personal best."

Self-select classes were originally trialled in South Grafton in the mid-1990s, but have since spread around the state.

Mr Vercoe said Junee students in the self-select classes had responded enthusiastically.

He said some students had grasped the opportunity with both hands while others who might not be viewed as "academic" had developed a mature and focused attitude when it came to their education.

The success of the program means the "Empower" program which takes the philosophy of self-select will be rolled out for all students.

"It's about empowering the students to be responsible for their learning and empowering them to be resilient - to overcome learning challenges," he said.
