The program, known as Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA), will be trialled in 40 preschools, including the Junee RSL Memorial Preschool, around the country for one year from February.

Five languages have been selected for the trial - Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, French and Arabic.

Junee RSL Memorial Preschool director Bec Hart said by introducing other languages to students, it would help with their English development as well.

"It helps with English development too - you're learning about the rules of language," she said.

The $9.8 million program will be delivered through 35 tablet apps being specially designed for the scheme - seven for each language.

By delivering the language lessons through the apps, the participating preschools won't have to employ dedicated language teachers.

Centres participating in the pilot will be provided with tablets by the federal government.

Ms Hart said with languages other than English not widespread in Junee, the new program would give kids at her preschool exposure to other languages that they would normally miss out on.

"I think if it's successful, it'll be a great way of giving children access to a secondary language when you're in a rural area where staff don't have a second language themselves," she said.

"We've got a few families that have English as a second language but not many and not many children who would have exposure to a second language at home."
