Cancer Council Victoria surveyed adults about reducing the accessibility of cigarettes last year.

Its study, released in June but made public on Tuesday, found that 73 per cent of Victorian adults surveyed would support a law that limited the number of venues that could sell tobacco products.

Quit Victoria, a smokers' support group which is part-funded by the Cancer Council, said on Tuesday that the idea that tobacco should be less accessible was becoming more popular.

Policy manager Kylie Lindorff said tobacco was sold in more than 8000 retail outlets across the state.

"[Tobacco] is more available than bread and milk, and can be sold by anyone, almost anywhere," she said.

Ms Lindorff said the state government should require retailers to obtain licences to sell tobacco and that they should be named on a public register. This would help make it harder to buy tobacco products in the long term.

She also said that limiting the availability of tobacco would be a key election priority for Quit ahead of the November state election.
