Emergency services were called after accident involving a motorcyclist and a cyclist both travelling in a northerly direction.
Acting Inspector Phil Malligan said early enquiries indicated the motorcyclist attempted to pass the cyclist on the road with the cyclist swerving in front of the bike.
The cyclist was thrown from the bicycle onto the road, suffering head injuries.
The motorcyclist suffered injuries to his hands and was admitted to hospital but later released.
Inspector Malligan said the motorcyclist stopped the bike and helped render first aid together with two passing motorists who also stopped to provide help.
A crime scene was established with police seizing both the motorcycle and the bicycle.
Inspector Malligan said mandatory drug and alcohol testing had been conducted with police awaiting results.
The cyclist remains in a critical condition and is expected to be transferred to a Sydney hospital.
Police investigations are continuing.
