Four men are charged with the murder of former Royal Marine Brett Williams outside Kings Park stadium in Durban after a Super 15 rugby match between the Melbourne Rebels and the Durban Sharks on March 23 last year.

Witnesses said that a group of men attacked Mr Williams, 29, after he accidentally bumped into a man while leaving the stadium.

Four men, Dustin Van Wyk, Blayne Shepard, 23, his brother Kyle, 25, and Andries van der Merwe, 23, each face a charge of murder and three charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Mr Williams was born in South Africa but had become a British citizen. After leaving the Marines he returned to South Africa where he had worked as a security guard protecting ships against piracy.

In the trial now being heard in the Durban Regional Court, witness, Baoto Ifomba, a security guard at the stadium, said an argument ensued between Mr Williams and a group of people before he was attacked:

"They were assaulting him, kicking him. Someone came with a brick and the deceased was lying on his back," Mr Ifomba said.

But when asked by magistrate Trevor Levitt on Tuesday if he was having difficulty identifying the accused because they were white, Mr Ifomba agreed.

"Yes. I see them alike, but I can differentiate between them by the colour of their hair. In this case I can be helped by the colour of their hair and their clothing," Mr Ifomba, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said.

He said he remembered that one of the men wore a pink shirt.

Mr Ifomba said that after paramedics arrived to tend to Mr Williams, one of the attackers was still there, and that the man pushed him to the ground when he pointed him out.

A policeman, Warrant Officer Craig Bekker, previously told the trial that Mr Williams was involved in at least four scuffles on the night he was killed.
