According to reports in the US, Williams' body was cremated and his ashes were scattered in San Francisco Bay.

The 63-year-old Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe winner was found dead in his home in northern California earlier this month.

According to reports, Williams' death certificate lists his date of disposition as August 12, the day after his body was found.

The death certificate also notes that Williams was cremated.

The place of "final disposition" is listed as "scattering in San Francisco, Bay, off the coast of Marin County, CA".

It also notes that the funeral was held at Monte's Chapel of the Hills, in San Anselmo, California.

Williams' family had said from the outset the star's funeral would be private, attended by family and very close friends.

That did not stop the publicity-hungry Westboro Baptist Church from claiming they would "picket" his funeral, despite the fact that no funeral details had been released publicly.

Williams' wife Susan Schneider confirmed that the iconic comedian and actor had been struggling with depression and had also been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

"Robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety, as well as early stages of Parkinson's disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly," Schneider said in her statement.

All of the members of Williams' immediate family released statements in the wake of his death; his children Zachary, Zelda and Cody spoke of their father's humour, warmth, kindness and gentle manner.

"The entire world is forever a little darker, less colourful and less full of laughter in his absence," 25-year-old Zelda Williams said.

Williams' eldest son Zachary, 31, asked "those that loved him to remember him by being as gentle, kind, and generous as he would be".

Younger son Cody, 23, said "the world will never be the same without him".
