The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) has recently held its 2012 Annual Conference on Thursday, 9 August in Hay NSW
The focus of the conference was on the theme “Growing our future”.
The keynote speaker for the conference was Mr Rob Gordon, CEO of SunRice,
Mr Gordon spoke about the return of Australian rice to global markets and the responsibilities and opportunities ahead for the rice industry in helping to ensure both food and nutritional security in a resource-constrained world.
Research and Development Australia (RDA) Riverina (New South Wales) sponsored three young people from the area to attend the conference.
Nicholas Atkinson, a student at La Trobe University in Melbourne who is studying a Bachelor of Agriculture Science Honours and also works on his family farm in the holidays; Rachel Kelly who is a Policy Officer at the National Irrigators Council and; Antony Vagg who has two agricultural science degrees and has been working on his own farm for two and a half years were chosen from a number of submissions from young people currently employed in the agricultural industry or studying an agriculture related course.
Guest speakers including Ben Barlow from Hay, Julie Evans from the Bureau of Meteorology, Tracey Allen from Rabobank and Tom Rooney from Waterfind presented information on important issues to assist the young rice growers to develop and strengthen their agricultural knowledge and other attendees in “Growing our Future”.
