Junee faced Wagga United, the reigning premiers and fought them to final whistle, eventually going down 2-nil.
"We played pretty well for our first game together," co-coach Isaac Cooper said.
"It was good to see where we were at the start of the season.
"We were in the contest for most of the game."
Cooper said himself and co-coach Jason Mutimer were pleased with how Junee went against the premiers, only conceding two goals.
With United's goals coming from a dot shot and a clearance, Cooper said it was difficult to gauge precisely where the first improvements were needed for the team.
"We can't really gauge too much off the first game, we're still getting structures and positions sorted," Cooper said.
"We had our chances but we need some shooting practice," he said.
The Jaguars regular training field is being worked on by council staff and last weekend's games marked the team's first foray onto a grass field after training at the recreation centre.
Best on field for Junee was Jade Becroft.
It's Becroft's first season in first grade after playing third grade last year and Cooper said he had a "cracking game".
Also impressive was Dominic Shepherd, who worked away quietly in the midfield.
"The mix of old heads in the midfield and young players around them worked well ... everything sort of gelled," Cooper said.
While the first grade team went down by just two goals, the Jaguars reserves had a harder time in their first game losing 15-nil.
