At Laurie Daley Oval last Sunday, the junior Diesels held on for a six-point victory over one of their biggest rivals. The Diesels had the wind at their backs in the first half and coach Rod Hands said players used it to full advantage.
“They put pressure on Temora from the get-go,” he said.Tyler Sutherland opened the scoring for Junee, crossing the line under the posts.Following that, the Diesels had the first of three tries disallowed for what was believed to be a forward pass, but Trent Field extended the team’s lead by two points after scoring a penalty goal.
In the halves, Cameron Hands and Derek Hay directed play brilliantly for the team, getting players moving up the field, which gave Joe Field the opportunity to score in the left-hand corner with three minutes remaining.A conversion by Trent Field gave Junee a 12-point lead after 40 minutes.
The Diesels held on to the lead for the remainder of the second half, but it looked a bit shakey as Temora scored within the first five minutes. Two further tries by the Diesels were disallowed for a forward pass and a knock-on.Hands said the team’s defence was unbelievable – only letting one try in during the entire game.
“There wasn’t a bad player out there,” he said.Matt Logan and Trent Field were the players’ players and Tyler Sutherland received the coach’s award, but Hands said the entire team was playing well.
There are two matches remaining before the finals commence and Hands said all players needed to do was to remain levelheaded. The Diesels will play Wagga Brothers at the Equex Centre on Sunday.
