In the video, Martin Tooth’s daughter jumps into the driver’s seat and successfully completes a burnout.
Channel 9’s A Current Affair program broadcast the video on Monday night, asking if Mr Tooth’s seven-year-old was “Australia’s youngest hoon”.
The video has since attracted thousands of shares, likes and comments on social media.
The majority of comments have defended Mr Tooth, who said the support from everyone had been overwhelming.
The ute has been modified to compete at burnout events and Mr Tooth is a regular competitor in the growing sport.
“On Sunday my oldest daughter wanted to learn about doing a burnout as she has seen me do at many organised events around the country,” Mr Tooth said in a post on Facebook.
Mr Tooth said it was a calculated and rehearsed operation with the ute anchored to a 5.5 tonne forklift.
He said his daughter had learned some valuable information about cars, including throttle control, gear selection and instrument interpretation.
“I was in control of the electrical cut out switch of the vehicle which effectively shuts down the fuel pumps and the ECU.
“I sat next to my daughter and instructed her how to manipulate the throttle,” Mr Tooth said.
“I have taught her that there is a time and a place for everything and she knows that this driving style can only be practised in a controlled environment such as a track or a similar situation to Sunday.
“She has a lot to learn about the sport of burnouts and how to safely control a car, but I will continue to teach my daughter to the best of my ability.”
