HARNESS racing royalty will descend on Junee Showgrounds tomorrow for Junee’s biggest racing meeting.
The annual Australia Day meeting will be held on January 25 and trainers and drivers will be heading down from Sydney for the chance to claim up to $14,000 in the Phoenix Accounting Pacers’ Cup.
Trainer Trevor White will be the only local to line up in the feature, on last-start winner Jesse Leon.
Club secretary Joanne Judd said she was excited about Friday.
“We have some really good fields,” she said.
“We don’t often see the city trainers and drivers at the country meetings ... it’s a good way to start the Australia Day long weekend,”
However it’s not all about the feature race, with spectators able to enjoy a full card of sensational racing.
This year’s Delta HLB Invitational Driver’s Challenge will see five local drivers – Bruce Harpley, Trevor White, Matthew Harris, Adam Jenkins and Steven Harris – take on city drivers Blake Fitzpatrick, Neil Day, David Moran and Jimmy Douglas.
After winning the invitational challenge in 2012, Robert Morris will be back to defend his crown.
Conducted over three races, the driver with the highest points haul wins, with the race expected to come down to the wire.
The Milbrae Quarries Final will also be one race to keep an eye on.
Owner and driver Trevor Allamby won last Saturday’s heat on the Brian Hancock trained Tobias James, a former Junee resident and Interdominion winner, Hancock will return for the Milbrae Quarries Final.
“It’s going to be a little harder than Saturday’s (heat) as Trevor has drawn the second line, but I think he’ll still be up there,” Judd said.
The other features of the night are the $10,000 Allan Harpley Memorial Free For All and the Phyllis Harpley Memorial Three Year Old Pace.
In the free for all, Sydney-trained Hesa Buzzin driven by Jim Douglass will battle Holy Camp Boy, trained in Young and driven by Michael Hardy.
The feature Three Year Old race will see an open field with the Young trained stable mates Holy Camp Clive and Holy Camp Wendy will battle it out for supremacy.
Aside from the action on track, the Junee Paceway will also have live entertainment till late, a free jumping castle and face painting and the mini-trotters between races.
The first races starts at 6.40pm.
