Smith again proves her speed in pool

11 Feb, 2010 01:20 PM
JUNEE High School swimming sensation Elise Smith made the most of her final school swimming carnival, breaking a record which had stood for 36 years.

Competing in the 17 years 50-metres freestyle event on Monday morning, Elise broke the record set in 1977 of 31.50 seconds with the breathtaking time of 31.18 seconds.

Still regaining her breath after the event, Elise told the Southern Cross she was “pretty excited” at breaking the record and wasn’t even looking to better the time.

From the moment she dived into the pool she put herself in the zone to complete the race as best she could.

It isn’t the first time she has broken a record at the Junee High swimming carnival. She is, in fact, the record holder for the 13, 14, 15 and 16 years 50m freestyle events as well.

Since she began at Junee High, she has broken every record existing.

The only title she won’t have her name against is the 12 years 50m freestyle as she wasn’t eligible for the event in year 7.

To help boost swimming carnival participation, the school held a fun day.

Both the seniors and juniors were split throughout the day with half participating in swimming events while the others used the stadium facilties for games of basketball and soccer.

House champion for the day was Salis which had a four-point win over Hammond.
