GIVING back to the Illabo community where dozens of its players hail from, the Cootamundra Tricolours took on the Leeton Phantoms in a stellar match up at Illabo on the weekend.
The old boys were the first to kick off at 1pm. In picture-perfect conditions they immediately put the referee under pressure to enforce the 10-metre rule.
After just 10 minutes, the Phantoms crossed the line for the first try of the day.
The Tricolours had the downhill run for the second half and exhibited excellent ball work to score a try after only 10 minutes.
Enjoying the game so much, both sides volunteered for a third half, with the game ending in a well-earned five-all draw.
The reserve grade Tricolours got off to
an excellent start, with Jacob Black scoring a converted try right on the five-minute mark.
Ten minutes later, Aaron Kemp crossed the line after solid running play by his teammates. His conversion brought the scoreline to 14-0.
However, Leeton redeemed itself by scoring a five-pointer at the end of the half.
Tricolours’ Alex Ingold scored four minutes into the half and the conversion brought the scoreline to 21-5.
However, the Phantoms crossed two minutes later in a strong scrum push to make it 21-10.
Consistent, positive play by the Tricolours resulted in Jacob Black scoring his second converted try for the day.
The Tricolours ran out 28-10 winners.
In the most anticipated match of the day, the first grade Leeton Phantoms gave away too many penalties
and could not keep up with the slick speed and ball work of the Tricolours, allowing Cootamundra to run away with the match 54-0.
Leeton gave away too many penalties in the first five minutes of the game, giving Alex Woodhouse the opportunity to kick his first penalty goal.
Phil Gay scored the first of his trifecta three minutes later, closely followed by James Burge.
Just before half-time Leeton gave away a penalty in front of the uprights, allowing Woodhouse to kick a penalty goal from 30 metres to make the score 30-0.
Further tries to Andrew Hillam, Phillip Carter and Andrew Collins continued Cootamundra’s Romano’s Cup resurgence.
