Title is within reach for Diesels

24 Jun, 2010 12:58 PM
THE Group Nine crown is closer at hand for the Junee Diesels after a 46-16 pummelling of the Lavington Panthers on Saturday.

The home ground advantage played well into Junee’s game despite the loss of playmaker Nathan McGowan on the field.

With forwards Jason Smith and Adam Vanzanten leading the way, Lavington had no answer to the Diesels’ defence.

Tries to Junee half-back Tom Lidden in the ninth minute, and Lavington coach Josh Cale in the 13th minute, gave the visitors 6-4 lead early in the game, but there were four more unanswered tries by the Diesels.

Turning on an incredible performance, the Diesels sat at a healthy 26-6 lead at half-time before continuing the onslaught in the second half, leaving Lavington with little response.

Centre Damien Willis opened the second half with a converted try putting the Diesels in front 32-6.

An intercept to Jordan Walker in the 58th minute resulted in the young Diesels five-eighth running 80 metres to score. Willis’ conversion took Junee’s lead to 38-6.

Tries to Diesels lock Cameron Woo and powerful centre Sione Tongia in the 79th minute had Junee leading 46-6.

Two late tries to Lavington put some credit on the board but they were only consolation tries. It was Lavington’s worst result for the 2010 season.

Best for Junee was Tongia, Walker and Adam Vanzanten.

Ladder positions changed dramatically with Lavington taking a dive from second to fourth.

This Saturday the Diesels travel to Gundagai to take on the Tigers at Anzac Park.
