 Foley foils the Pickers

Foley foils the Pickers

07 Jul, 2011 10:54 AM
THE Diesels made their way to Alfred Oval in Young to take on the Cherrypickers last weekend and triumphed 24-20 over the home side.

A brilliant 80-metre run by Diesels’ young gun Daniel Foley helped Junee back into contention when the side was chasing points.

Junee coach Mark Elia said if Foley kept up his confidence, there was potential for him to become one of the team’s great attacking players.

In a tightly fought game, Cherrypickers and Junee scored an equal amount of tries – Foley and Blake Cowled scored once each, while Phil Latu scored twice.

Goal conversions were the difference, with Young only managing to convert twice, while dynamite goal kicker Johno Carl converted four for the Diesels.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Young made a last-gasp attempt to clinch victory and started a run down the right side of the field.

However, Diesels’ winger Matt Ward stepped out and stopping any chance for Young scoring.

Elia said it was a similar play to when the Diesels faced Albury. However, instead of going down by two points, Junee retained the lead.

Junee is now perched in fourth place on the Group Nine ladder, and will will take on the Tumbarumba Greens at Willow Park this weekend.

The Greens have been camped at the bottom of the ladder for most of the season, but claimed a striking victory against the Cootamundra Bulldogs last weekend.

Elia described the win as “unbelieveable” but conceded with three new Fijian players, plus another one on the way, the win was coming for the mountain team.

“By the looks of things, they’ll be a little harder (to beat),” Elia said.

Junee brought some of the younger players to the game with Trent Schubach making his first grade debut, and Alex Perry playing his second game.

Both players saw action earlier in the day with the under 18s team running away with the game against Young 36 - 6.
