THE Junee Diesel’s first-half performance against the Southcity Bulls at the weekend mirrored their display against Tumut, much to the dismay of coach Mark Elia.
But luckily this time, the Diesels powered away with a welcome 44-10 victory after the side banished bad habits and mistakes from the previous game.
The Diesels rocked the Bulls with a try by winger Josh Whitty in the fourth minute and never looked back.
In quick succession, Junee made its way to three more tries to be cruising at 20-0 after just 24 minutes as the skill of five-eighth Nathan McGowan combined with the strength of centre Sione Tongia and Willie Purcell.
The Diesels points were answered with Southcity’s Peter Little scoring a try in the 34th minute.
Fears of a second collapse in an many games disappeared with Tongia smashed his way through the Southcity line for a try in the 48th minute, but the Bulls still had the Diesels working hard.
Three or four times Southcity went perilously close to scoring before Junee wrapped things up with tries by halfback Tom Lidden and winger Gavin Lamb.
By the time McGowan put Walker over the line for his second try in the 76th minute it was all one-way traffic until Southcity broke the spell.
The Bulls reward came at the last minute when Kyle McCarthy and Little combined to make space for Brent Merritt to snatch a second try.
Cameron Woo and Nathan McGowan were presented with the coach’s and players’ player awards. Junee will take on Cootamundra this weekend at Willow Park on Sunday.
