THE art of the hand and foot, otherwise known as taekwondo, is fast becoming one of the most popular sports at Illabo Public School.
For the last three weeks the school’s students have been taking part in the special Active After School program which has allowed them access to one of the best taekwondo instructors in the region.
Lachlan Cooper, who has a third degree black belt, has been teaching the students the basics of the Korean sport.
“I’ve been teaching them basic blocks, attacks, punches and kicks, but I’ve also been teaching them about having respect for people,” he said.
“A lot of taekwondo is about integrity and trust.”
With the students responding well and their enthusiasm levels at a high, Mr Cooper, who is the head instructor for United Taekwondo, said they were improving, despite only having three hours of lessons under their belts.
“They are fantastic,” he said. “I’ve found it’s because, for them, it is so different.”
Deliverer of Active After School sport at Illabo, Justine Churchill, said the school was lucky to have booked Mr Cooper for the five-week period.
With the classes being just one hour long, she said the students were already hooked on heading into the Junee Junction Recreation Centre to take part in the class.
“They are just loving it,” Mrs Chruchill said. “It caters for all ages.”
With none of the students having tried the sport before, Mrs Churchill said it was wonderful a grant had been provided to allow them to take part in an activity that was not regularly available in Junee.
With two weeks of classes remaining, the students will surely miss their taekwondo instuction when it ends.
