ATTRACTING more than 50 players from across NSW, the annual Tooheys Classic Pairs tournament went off without a hitch.
Players from Junee, Queanbeyan, Wagga, The Rock, Bomaderry, Tumut, Holbrook, Dunolly, Victoria and beyond came to the local greens to try their hand at the six-game tournament.
The competition was fierce with each pair of players contesting two games a day.
While the eventual winners were from outside Junee, the locals didn’t let the visitors run away easily with the prizes, giving them some solid competition.
The club’s three greens were playing “bloody beautifully”, according to local player and club selector Arthur Devlin.
Devlin, partnered by Bob Thompson took on the Queanbeyan team of Wayne McLennan and John “Fatty” Wynd, who were eventually placed third in the competition.
Despite having good greens and local knowledge, the local team trailed with McLennan and Wynd picking up the match win 23 shots to 11 after 20 ends.
“It was a tough game because Bob, Fatty and myself have been playing sport with each other for all our lives,” Devlin said.
Wynd added: “I’ve been coming to this competition a while, it’s good to come back and meet some old friends.
“All three greens peform differently, only differing in pace.
The greenkeeper has got them maintained very well.”
The next major event for the bowling club will be the Westpac Triples Classic in August.
