RELIVING their love of the game, 14 women took to Wagga’s hockey fields last week.
In horrendous conditions and constant rain, the Billabong team soldiered on, showing glimpses of brilliances and flexiability at the annual Packham Cup Hockey carnival.
The original team started at primary school, with children from Nangus, Eurongilly and Illabo and founding members Bec Heffernan, Lyn Mollony and Cathy Passlow played on the day.
Due to late changes in the carnival draw, all the ladies’ teams were ungraded.
This meant Billabong came up against teams of registered Wagga players which compete all season, making the games intense and challenging.
Billabong won three games and lost one in its pool.
A decider match for third and fourth place was played.
Unfortunately, five games in one day, in terrible conditions, proved too much and Billabong was defeated.
Credit goes to the ladies for achieving fourth place on the day without ever playing as a team on a full field.
Much laughter was had and goals were scored by Jenny Hogan, Liz Herffernan and Lyn Moloney.
Amazing defending skills were on display from Cathy Passlow, Viv Hamilton and goalie Amy Hazelwood.
There was great support in the centre by Amber Hillam, Vicky Sutherland, Lucy Sheridan and strong attacking play was achieved by Emma Brabin, Karen Coe and Felicty Molineaux.
A match against the male ex-hockey players in the Illabo, Eurongilly and Nangus area will be held at Illabo in the coming weeks.
