Wagga pacer Scooting?Armbro proved too tough for his rivals to claim Tuesday night’s Junee Pacers Cup (2170 metres).
In an action-packed feature race, Scooting Armbro outstayed his rivals to win the Cup in track record time.
Scooting Armbro failed to lead from gate one, but was quick to get off the pegs and sit outside leader Myrniong Vancealot.
Deadsetlucky had the prize one-one run and looked the winner when he hooked out with 500m to run.
But Scooting Armbro proved no easy horse to pass and toughed it out to win by a neck.
Junee pacer Jesse Leon was six metres away in third place.
Winning trainer Bernie Kelly admitted he was concerned after the start but praised his horse’s grit.
“I was a bit (worried) but I knew he’d push forward after that and that’s what he did,” Kelly said.
“Deadsetlucky had every chance to beat him but he’s (Scooting Armbro) pretty tough.”
Kelly also paid tribute to the drive by long-time associate Bruce Harpley.
Kelly originally wanted to sell Scooting Armbro but he’s now starting to warm to the horse.
“He’s getting better with every start,” Kelly said.
“He is pretty tough.”
Final Arrival was the first casualty in the Cup, going into a gallop after finding the lead.
Myrniong Vancealot then galloped around the final bend.
Scooting Armbro recorded a mile rate of 2min00.2sec.
It was a big night for Kelly and Harpley, who combined to win three races on Tuesday evening.
It was also a memorable night for Marrar’s Damien McKelvie who trained his first winner when Goodoldcollingwood bolted in to take the final race.
