14 May, 2009 09:54 AM
The Junee Bowling Club’s number six pennant side last Sunday won the final in its division, beating Wagga RAFC Rules Club 63-56 at the South Wagga Bowling Club.

The premiership-winning team was Bruce Makeham, Deiter Ptaschinski, Jarrod Smith and Wilbur Mann (skip), Roy Woodall, John Puttock, Jed Passlow and Arthur Devlin (skip), Sean Smith, Lyle Billingham, Les Hayward and Stewy Seton (skip), standby reserve Todd Clarke, second reserve Clinton Cochrane, and third reserve Noel Lawson.

Eight of the 15-man squad played their first year in pennants and by next year will be pushing for a spot in the top grade.

Played in front of about 120 spectators, many from Junee, the match was well in the balance after the 60th end.

With two rinks completed and trailing 53-56, the Junee team – led by Wilbur Mann – hit its straps and

finished in style, scoring 10 shots on the last three ends.

Congratulations to all players on a job well done.

Last Thursday Maureen Thompson and Gail Wallace travelled to Ganmain to contest the Women’s district pairs final.

Playing against the Wagga Women’s Club’s Judy Beck and Pat Williams, the Junee ladies were too good, winning 24-10.

Congratulations to Maureen and Gail, who now advance to the zone play-offs at Harden on June 16 and 17.

Both the men’s and ladies bowls sections wish them all the best.

Last Wednesday afternoon, 20 players took to the green for two games of pairs and two games of triples.

Winners on the day were Sandra Stevens, Ivan Fitzgerald and Ian Hearn with 41 points, Helen Ptaschinski and Harry Thompson finished runner-up with 38 points.

The jackpot was not won and stands at $191. On Saturday the last minor singles quarter-final was played.

Jed Passlow played Mark Hogan and after the 20th end Hogan led 23-8, with Passlow winning only five ends.

Passlow then got his act together and won nine of the next 14 ends to trail 27-30.

Hogan scored the winning shot on the 35th end to take the game 27-31.

Also on Saturday the ladies enjoyed a game of triples, while the men played a game of fours.

Winners on the ladies rink were Pat Wray, Barbara Anderson and Gail Wallace, over Helen Ptaschinski, Beryl Lawson and Maureen Thompson 23-19.

On the men’s rink, Bob Thompson, Allan Shaw, Steve Smith and Wilbur Mann tooke the honours with 21 points.

The jackpot was not won and stands at $32. Due to an error on the scorecard, and some great sportsmanship by Bryan Purse, the second semi-final in the major singles will be replayed. A date is yet to be set for the rematch.

Meanwhile, Martin Holmes is eagerly awaiting an opponent in the club’s major final.

Social bowls are played Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, please put your name in by 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
