Junee’s Group Nine first grade team decimated Young before a large crowd at Willow Park on Saturday. It was a sweet victory against a team which had trounced them on the first day of the season last year.
Before the match, a minute’s silence was held for emerging star Luke Heffernan who had started playing for first grade this year. His No 12 guernsey was a sad reminder of his untimely passing and was hung over the bench during the game.
With new players Brad Pope and Otoa Tulaga starting very impressively and Adam Perry playing as lock, the Junee boys could not do anything wrong for the first 20 minutes.
Perry, Pope, Damien Willis and Ben Chisholm scored four unanswered tries to lead by 22 points to 0 after 20 minutes.
However, the next 20 minutes were very scratchy with both sides having plenty of opportunity to score.
Gavin Lamb scored the first converted try of the second stanza in the left corner.
Tom Diggins, backing up well from reserve grade, executed his trademark step to score beside the post for the next converted try.
It was after this, with 16 minutes to go, that Junee allowed Young to score its one and only try.
However, with 12 minutes to go, Mark Halliburton danced over the line to score.
He was followed by Daryn Deacon, who received a beautiful pass from Geremy McNamara, who ducked through a hole and ran 50 metres in an outstanding piece of play.
And with two minutes to go, Brad Pope steam-rolled over the line after some superb running and passing between Damian Willis and himself.
Unfortunately, in-form fullback Matthew Cummins dislocated his shoulder towards the end of the first half and will be out for four weeks.
Nonetheless, Junee can take consolation in a stunning result that has placed them in a solid position at the beginning of the season.
Tom Diggins, Geremy McNamara and Brad Pope were the deserved standouts at the presentation later in the day.
