THE colour and excitement of the FIFA World Cup were celebrated at Junee High School on Tuesday, with a keenly contested football match between the students and staff.
The first half was played at a fast pace, with Tim Heard playing well in goal for the students.
A solid clash between Mr Roberts and Jordan McGregor typified the intensity of the game.
With Sandra Heffernan making some excellent saves for the staff, the score remained at 0-0 at half-time.
The start of the second half saw referee Luke Kerlin make a controversial handball decision.
While a penalty was given, Alissa Manwaring was not red carded, definitely not FIFA World Cup style.
Shortly after, school captain Ethan Sims just missed scoring when his long-range shot sailed over the bar.
Tragedy then struck for the staff as Mrs Jeffs, in
her appropriately labelled “We Were Robbed” T-shirt, scored an unfortunate own goal.
The students continued to dominate the half, though the staff did have a late goal disallowed.
Despite this, the final score remained 1-0 to the students.
Interviewed shortly after the game, student captain Cassie Armour said the students had proven their superiority but they had always known it.
Opposing captain, principal Peter Mowbray, was gracious in defeat.
“The game was played in a good-natured manner,” he said.
“School spirit was the winner. We even scored the goal for them.”
