THE grand finals of Junee six-a-side soccer were played out last Wednesday night with all matches providing excellent football played at break-neck pace along with a little drama.
In the men’s A grand final Thirsty Merks sprung the surprise of the season with a 1-0 victory over That’s Gold, which had gone through all prior games undefeated.
Joe Crowder scored the winning goal with a brilliant volley that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
The match was hard and fast with both teams eager to get on top.
The speed of the play was exceptional and provided some top-notch attacking football from both teams and was complemented by extremely solid defensive work.
Thirsty Merks capitalised on one great opportunity they had.
Best on Field was Thirsty Merks’ Jason Willis.
Licorice Htrs took the women’s A grand final 4-1 in a dominant display over Topssip.
Both teams worked very hard to create great opportunities to score, but Licorice Htrs made better use of the opportunities.
Unrelenting attack, solid defence and great goalkeeping kept Topssip out of the game.
Licorice Htrs were never headed in this match-up and were able to dominate play and power towards another A grade grand final win.
Abby Duncan and Chelsea McGregor both scored a brace while Tricia Foley scored for Topssip.
Best on field was Licorice Htrs Chelsea McGregor.
In the women’s B grand final Sutfol took the game from an under-strength EPS Eddos 6-1 to record its first grand final win.
Sutfol had little problem accounting for Eddos as they were only able to field three players for the match.
Erica Splitt netted a brace of goals, while Kim Kelly, Kira Brownfield, Taiya McKenzie and Fiona McKenzie contributed with well taken goals for Sutfol.
Charlotte Merrigan scored a consolation goal for Eddos.
Best on field was EPS Eddos PS’ Karinda George.
In the men’s B grand final Team Judd had to battle hard all the way to take the match 2-1 over a determined Putto’s Sparkies.
Both teams were able to make inroads but finishing was a little eratic and this can be attributed to the defensive work put in by both sets of defenders.
The match was even and with Aidan Judd and Will Holt netting for Team Judd, the lone reply by Jamieson Howell was just not enough.
Best on field was Team Judd’s Toby Sainsbury.
In the women’s C grand final Kemp’s Foxy Loxys and Illabo Hotel played another great match that went to a penalty shoot out to get a winner after full-time and extra time saw the score at nill all.
This grade has seen the major semi-final, final and now the grand final all decided by penalty shoot outs this season, which is extraordinary.
Both teams played some great football with the game seesawing as attack, after attack was turned back by both teams.
The opportunities created were foiled by good goalkeeping or wayward shooting.
After 10 minutes of extra time, the teams went to the penalty shoot out to get a result and Illabo proved more accurate, taking it 3-1.
Illabo Hotel scorers were Renee Fox, Elizabeth Carter and Lindsie Newham, while Bek Reynolds scored for Kemp’s Foxy Loxys.
Best on field was Illabo Hotel’s Nicole Ryan.
