IT was a foggy afternoon when Junee Jaguars met the
fourth-placed Tolland reserve grade team at Burns Park on Sunday.
Both teams came out firing in the first half.
Some solid attack and defence from the Tolland side was
matched by Junee’s unyielding backline and the unbreakable Paul McGilvray in goal.
The Jaguars were able to make many line breaks.
However, they were not playing smart enough – always looking for a through ball instead of keeping simple options open.
Later Tolland made a handball mistake in its own 18-yard box, earning Ray Jones a penalty kick on the dot.
Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful and at half-time the teams hit the sheds with the score 0-0.
Both sides become frustrated under pressure in the second half and were rushing passes and the play of the ball.
Body and mental fitness and were put to the test as players became frustrated by their inability to put goals on the scoreboard.
Junee wasn’t slacking off in this half, wanting the ball and constantly sniffing for a goal to take the victory.
That opportunity eventually made itself available from a corner kick and a mistake from the Tolland ’keeper.
This allowed Ray Jones to easily pass the ball, completely untouched, into the net, putting Junee ahead with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Junee held its opposition scoreless with the remaining time and ran away with a 1-0 win.
Best on the day were Ray Jones, Jason Mutimer, Aidan Judd and Paul McGilvray.
