Jaguars caged by United

20 May, 2010 12:42 PM
THE Junee Jaguars suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Wagga United in Sunday’s Pascoe Cup clash at Burns Park.

The 11-1 scoreline was indicative of the performance of both teams, with Wagga United playing some excellent free-flowing football and Junee struggling.

Junee holding out while under siege in the first half – forced to work hard in defence and only able to mount a few attacks of its own.

The defensive effort was top-notch, but a failure to contain the United strikers proved fatal, with five goals being scored in the first half.

When the Junee players got the ball on the deck and found their feet, they showed glimpses of being able to match their opponents and did make inroads into the United goal.

The inability to find feet and string passes together consistently was the team’s downfall on the day.

United went further ahead in the second half and Junee again struggled, but showed more resolve and was stronger in its defensive effort, which put pressure on the United attack.

The team’s persistence finally found it with a score on the board.

Chris Sweeney finished off a passing movement to beat the United ’keeper, showing that when the boys do put it together, they are lethal.

Junee just needs to heighten its intensity, strengthen its passing and create more opportunites by effective ball movement.

Best for Junee was Chris Sweeney, Haydn Boettcher, Jared Baldry and Ben White.

Junee’s womens side hosted top-of-the-table Wagga United and went down 3-0 in a hard-fought match.

The first half was an armwrestle with some good defence and some sparkling attacking play but neither side was able to dominate.

A lapse in concentration resulted in United scoring just on half-time.

The second half was a repeat of the first, with some great attacks by Junee putting pressure on the United defence but a number of good chances went begging with wayward shots.

United was awarded a penalty which was converted and another late goal took the scoreline out to 3-0.

Junee was never out of this game and will learn a lot from it.

Best for Junee on the day were Abby Duncan, Nicole Post, Megan Puttock and Prue Duncan.
