Hard-fought soccer battle

15 Jul, 2010 11:40 AM
AFTER some confusion as to whether the game would go ahead or not, Junee played at home against Gundagai.

The game started badly, with Gundagai scoring inside the first two minutes.

This came partly due to Gundagai playing a good through ball for the forwards to run onto and Junee having an inexperienced ’keeper filling in for Darren Corbett while he was away.

Despite this, ’keeper Darron Watt ended up having a great game in goal.

Spurred on by Gundagai’s quick goal, Junee quickly settled and in no time scored the equaliser, one of the fastest goals Junee has scored.

The ball was kicked from a goal kick to Josh Commins who then played a through ball for Fletcher Cook to run onto and slot it neatly passed the ’keeper, from ’keeper to the net in three kicks.

With about 10 minutes to go before half- time, Gundagai scored again after an initial save by Junee’s ’keeper.

The ball was chipped back in with a mix-up ensuing between one of the backs and the ’keeper, with the Gundagai striker nodding the ball over everyone into the net.

After the half-time talk, Junee came out playing better football and in no time had a penalty awarded after a Gundagai player handled the ball inside the penalty area.

Josh Commins walked up and confidently shot the ball past the ’keeper to take the score to 2-2.

The game then continued to move from one end of the field to the other, with many attacking moves breaking down with the last pass going astray or the Gundagai defence blocking the attack.

The younger players for Junee – Josh Commins, Joe Newman and Zac Hogarth –were having great games, at times laying tackles on players a lot bigger and passing the ball around with full confidence.

With about 10 minutes to go, Gundagai were awarded a corner kick and after another mix-up with the ball getting stuck between players feet, saw the ball toe-poked into the corner of the net giving the ’keeper no chance of stopping it. Junee tried their hardest to pull the score back but the final score ended up 3-2 to Gundagai.
