Red Cow digs deep to win

21 Jan, 2010 09:41 AM
ON Saturday, the Red Cow travelled to Gundagai to take on Lotts and booked a place in next weekend’s Twenty20 grand final with a fantastic six-wicket victory.

Lotts won the toss and chose to bat on a very grassy wicket and got away to a solid start through John Smith and Chris Tozer.

Shaun McNamara got the breakthrough in the fifth over when Smith edged the ball and Mitch Druce took a screamer in slips.

Lotts recovered to be 1-67 after ten overs with the help of some sloppy fielding, but for the third game in a row Druce came in and destroyed the middle order batting with some fine medium pace bowling.

A late flurry of boundaries by Tozer helped guide Lotts over 140 before he was involved in some ordinary running between wickets which brought about his downfall.

Lotts finished its 20 overs with a respectable 7-147.

The Red Cow required 7.5 runs an over if it was to win the game and started well with both openers getting a start.

Adam Peade was the standout batsman, as he blasted 65 off 48 deliveries, including 10 fours and a massive six.

Brad Willis (13 off 7), Trent Charlton (18 off 18) and Mitch Druce (16 off 20) all made handy contributions to the run chase.

However, the runs dried up when Lotts slow bowler Chris Tozer was introduced and he claimed two quick wickets to leave the Red Cow needing 35 runs from 29 deliveries.

Mick Butler (26 off 19) and Shaun McNamara (14 off 10) then both came in and handled the pressure with ease, sending the ball to the boundary and eclipsing Lotts’ total in the 19th over.

The Red Cow will now play the Junee Stallions in next weekend’s Twenty20 grand final which will be held in Gundagai starting at 3pm.

The match should be a close contest as the Stallions were undefeated throughout the competition

and the Red Cow’s only loss was against the Stallions way back in October.
