THE name Willow Park has been consigned to the history books, with Junee Shire Council voting to rename the field and amenities building after legendary rugby league player Laurie Daley.
In November, Terry Sykes of Junee and former resident Terry Seton wrote to council asking it to rename the oval at Willow Park after Mr Daley. At the time, councillors voted to name the new broadcast box and amenities building after Mr Daley – however, deputy mayor Norm Bray and councillors Paul Holdsworth and Robin Cuttle launched a successful rescission motion.
For almost 30 minutes, councillors debated how Mr Daley could be honoured, with a proposal by Cr Neil Smith to rename the oval at Willow Park after him resulting in a deadlocked vote.
With one councillor away, mayor Lola Cummins used her casting vote to defeat the motion.
However, a motion moved by Cr Bray to drop the name Willow Park althogether was passed by council five votes to two.
It’s not the first time there was an attempt to rename the field – an earlier decision in 2002 was deferred until the playing surface could be improved.
In August, rugby league commentator Ray Warren was honoured with a bronze statue placed at Junee’s centre in Dobbyn Park.
