 We are Australian

We are Australian

28 Jan, 2010 09:23 AM
HUNDREDS of Junee residents bursting with Aussie pride gathered to celebrate Australia Day as a united community on Tuesday.

Decked out in clothing and hats bearing our nation’s flag, the Southern Cross or the colours green and gold, attendees at the Junee Junction Recreation and Aquatic Centre celebrations certainly looked the part.

The Jail Break Fun Run got events off to a cracking start and the competitors’ arrival at the recreation centre set the day’s celebrations into motion.

Runners were greeted at the finish line with a hearty breakfast of bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches and were joined by those who had elected to start the day in a slightly more relaxed manner.

The activities kept the morning rolling along with Aquarobics on offer in the pool for those keen to cool off and a demonstration RPM class in the stadium for those who prefer to watch other people keeping fit.

It was standing room only for the official proceedings which kicked off at 9.30am with up to 500 proud citizens packing into the Junee Junction Recreation and Aquatic Centre to pay tribute to Australia Day nominees.

Junee’s Australia Day ambassador, radio and television personality Glenn Wheeler, addressed the crowd and provided a number of good laughs and candid moments.

Mr Wheeler said he was thrilled to be part of Junee’s celebrations and had enjoyed the chance to get out of the big smoke for a few days with his wife Michelle.

“It is a delight to be in Junee,” he said.

“Being the city-slickers we are, we don’t have the opportunity to experience country life and I often wish I could come out and see some more of Australia.

“That’s what is so great about being an ambassador, we get to come out and see parts of the country we might not ordinarily get to see.”
