CAR owners can expect to pay more at the till when registering their cars from July 1.
A new tax levy under the NSW Government’s $50.2 billion Metropolitan Transport Plan will see regional motorists slammed with an increased weight tax when registering their vehicle.
The tax will raise up to $500 million over the next decade with motorists expected to be charged anywhere between $5 to $50 for cars heavier than 975 kg.
NRMA Motoring and Services director Graham Blight said regional drivers will become cash cows for a Government which is punishing regional communities by making them pay for a Sydney-focused transport plan.
“Regional NSW motorists will be paying higher registration charges to fund Sydney-centric transport projects and will not see any of this money reinvested in regional roads – many of which are in poor condition.
“This is a cruel blow for regional motorists,” he said.
Premier Kristina Keneally defended the tax increase and its impact on regional NSW stating better transport in Sydney benefited the whole country.
“We do need to acknowledge that Sydney in particular is the engine room not just of the NSW economy but Australia’s economy.
She said the levy will see lighter vehicles pay less and encourage motorists to buy lighter vehicles as a benefit to the environment.
Heavy vehicle owners will be hit the hardest with vehicles over 1505kg attracting a $30 registration increase.
