Storm ignites stubble blaze

THE recent unusual pattern of storms around the district has resulted in lightening strikes igniting paddock stubble.

Last Friday, Rural Fire Service crews from Old Junee, Junee and Yathella were called to a property, which fronts the Olympic Highway, to extinguish a canola field which had caught fire.

Several private crews also helped control the blaze, which burnt approximately 20 hectares before it was extinguished.

A lack of high tempratures and strong wins, plus the prompt response from volunteers meant the fire was easily containable community safety officer James Smith said.
