A FIRE safety and prevention lecture for seniors is being offered by the Junee Fire Brigade in the lead up to the winter months.
Junee Fire Brigade deputy captain Peter Smith said those aged over 65 should think about attending the day.
“It’s about home fire safety and to be aware of what to do,” he said.
“It’s been shown those from the age group of 65 years and over are in more danger because they move slower.
“It’s also about being aware of what is in the house.
“A lot of older residents will have older items than young people, who tend to have brand new things, which means it could be more likely to catch fire.”
During the lecture, seniors have the opportunity to ask questions about fires, safety and keeping their fire plans up to date.
An informational DVD will be played and a small fire demonstration with a fire blanket is expected to be carried out.
Also on the agenda is a move to quash the belief that fire services charges for call outs.
“I want to reaffirm that’s not the case,” Mr Smith said.
“Pensioners are not charged for call outs by the fire brigade.”
Each year around 30 per cent of fires attended by NSW brigades occur during the winter months.
