Seniors get taste of World Wide Web

25 Mar, 2010 10:22 AM
Surfing the web, emailing and downloading is almost second nature to some, but for many seniors technology is hard to keep up with.

As a part of NSW Seniors Week the Junee Library held an internet course to give seniors a brush up on their computer use.

With plenty of one-on-one encouragement, seniors were taken through how to sign up for free web-based emails, search for information in search engines and learning basic screen icons.

Doreen Schubach, who has had a computer for two years, said she signed up for the course to refresh herself with the internet after using it sporadically.

She said she found the internet a useful tool of look up things quickly and being able to use it in the comfort of her own home was a big plus.

“I can look at anything I want to see, like if I miss something on the news or if I miss something in the paper.”

Mrs Schubach said taking the course allowed her to catch up with new information on technology which has come about since she took a computer course through TAFE.

Librarian Margaret Kanaley said by the end of the lesson seniors should walk away with the ability to search the internet, use an email program and know basic computer functions.
