COOLER weather was welcomed this year as the sixth annual Junee Poker Run and Blues Night rumbled into town on Saturday.
A record number of bikes took part in this year’s event, with some motorcycles doubled up with passengers.
Poker run committee member Ron Hindmarsh said 308
bikes registered for the event, bringing a great deal of
people and fundraising dollars to town.
This year the fundraising total, which will benefit charity group Junee Can Assist, has broken the record of donations made by the run in previous years.
“We’re still looking into it as we have a few bills to pay yet, but it looks like more than we gave them last year – so somewhere around $7000,” Mr Hindmarsh said.
And with 42 people in Junee currently battling cancer, Junee Can Assist president Peter Mack said the donation would be well received in helping the organisation continue to provide cancer patient assistance.
Mr Hindmarsh said the majority of the money would be passed on to Junee Can Assist with part being donated to the Junee Volunteer Rescue Association and to a girl in Wagga who is a quadriplegic after a motorcycle accident last year.
The group travelled from Junee to North Wagga, Mangoplah, through The Rock to Collingullie and then on to Coolamon and Marrar before returning to Junee.
All up, the ride took about six hours to complete, including stops at each location.
The day was topped off with a night of soulful blues entertainment from three bands for all to enjoy.
Winners on the night were Steve McDermott, who was awarded the best hand of the run with three aces and a pair of twos, and Ron Hindmarsh, who, as fate would have it, drew himself as the winner of the Can Assist raffle $5000 travel voucher.
