JUNEE’S citizen of the year, Pat Foley, was in distinguished company last week during the Australia Day awards.
Several of Junee’s volunteers were recognised for the effort they put in each day for many of the town’s organisations.
“We all know someone who does so much for the community quietly without looking for recognition,” mayor Lola Cummins said.
A member of the Australia Day committee, Cr Cummins said she was pleased to see so many people nominated this year.
“Our volunteers are a valuable resource, as they are to any community,” Cr Cummins said.
“It’s these people who make Junee a great place to live,” she said.
Also recognised last week was university student Jade Belling for her leadership at Junee High School and her role in last year’s fundraising efforts for the Queensland floods.
Bowler Bryan Purse received the sports sward for his peformances as a player, effort as a selector and for developing new talent.
Mr Purse won the Wagga and distict champion of champions major singles title for the second year in a row.
One of the new talents at the bowling club, Sean Smith, received the junior sports award.
But far from restricting himself to bowls, Mr Smith’s efforts in touch football and basketball were recognised as part of the award.
