A PUBLIC holiday sleep-in may have been tempting for many Junee residents, but those with a little energy to burn were in their sneakers well before breakfast time.
About 150 keen runners of all abilities hit the road for the annual 4.5-kilometre Jail Break Fun Run which kicked off at the Junee Correctional Centre.
A small leading pack broke away early, setting a blistering pace, while others elected to adopt a more leisurely speed.
Those meeting the fun runners at their destination, the Junee Junction Recreational and Aquatic Centre, didn’t have to wait long, with the first participant across the line completing the event in just under 15 minutes.
Seasoned athlete Dominic Shepherd took out first place, taking just 14minutes and 45 second to complete the course.
While not undertaking any special training for the run, Mr Shepherd was well prepared, and can regularly be seen pounding the pavement in readiness for upcoming competitions.
“I’m a runner and cyclist,
I do a bit of triathlon, I have one in Wagga this weekend,” he said.
Keeping it in the family, Mr Shepherd’s wife Julie proved her own sporting prowess by taking out first place in the women’s division with a time of 20 minutes.
The first junior boy across the line was 14-year-old Taran Scott, while the junior girl’s division ended in a three-way tie between 10-year-old twins Olivia and Taylah Howell and 12-year-old Billie-Rose Deacon.
