Jump into action this Heart Week

29 Apr, 2010 12:06 PM
WITH cardiovascular disease remaining one of Australia’s leading killers, people are being urged to exercise to try to curb its onset.

National Heart Week starts this Sunday and the Junee Junction Recreation and Aquatic Centre fitness team is urging residents to take part in a Heart Moves class which will run next Friday, May 7.

The class, designed and managed by the Australian Heart Foundation, can help those at risk of heart disease onset or who have experienced heart problems, according to instructor Jenny Read.

Having taught the program at various locations for 10 years, Mrs Read said the majority of people who took part were over the age of 50 and aware of maintaining their health.

“A lot of people who speak to us are aware they are in the at-risk time of their lives and need to keep active,” she said.

“But this is for everyone.”

Figures recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show cardiovascular disease was responsible for 46,821 deaths (33.7 per cent of all deaths) in 2008, proving there is no better time than Heart Week to get a jump start.

Attended regularly by a group of around 15, Mrs Read said Heart Moves offered not only a social experience, but a workout which could be tailored to an individual’s abilities.

Participants can achieve a number of health benefits, including improved sleep, weight management, lower blood pressure and arthritis management .

Those who would like to take part but are unsure of their health in doing so are asked to contact their general practitioner to get

clearance.

Entry is a gold coin donation and the class begins at 2pm.
