Game of the name not over

A DECISION made last month at Junee Shire Council will be up for review with a recission motion launched by councillors.

On November 22, Junee shire councillors voted to rename the new broadcast box, kiosks and toilets at Willow Park the Laurie Daley Pavilion.

The recission motion has been launched as three councillors are understood to be unhappy with the newly applied name.

Junee resident Terry Sykes and Dapto resident Terry Seton requested council to consider renaming the oval at Willow Park after Mr Daley, however at the last meeting a motion was moved to instead rename the new building.

“The original proposal was name it the Laurie Daley Oval at Willow Park,” Mr Sykes said.

He said it was about giving special recognition to the oval, where Mr Daley was best remembered for entertaining the hundreds of Junee residents who came to watch local rugby.

“It’s (was) a missed opportunity to give Laurie Daley the recognition he deserves,” Mr Sykes said.

Mr Sykes joked Mr Daley didn’t take the football world by storm selling pies in the kiosk, but playing on Willow Park’s oval.

Willow Park will receive a huge boost once the new broadcast box and kiosk is complete but it could be years away depending on funding and Mr Sykes said buildings age and could eventually be demolished, but the oval would not be moving.

“I think it would mean more to Laurie Daley to name the oval after him and not the kiosk,” he said.

Mr Sykes said the argument of having an oval in the park was moot, as Jubilee Park in Wagga contained the Connelly Rugby Complex within its grounds.

The rescission motion to retract the naming of the

Laurie Daley Pavilion will come before council on December 20.

It’s not the first time interested residents have attempted to rename all or part of Willow Park, with a previous attempt not getting past the Junee Sports Committee.
