A TRAIN driver who took friends on a drunken ride on his golf cart at Junee received a sobering message in Wagga Local Court this week.
Clinton Reynolds, 28, was ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for 14 months after pleading guilty to driving with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol.
Reynolds recorded a blood alcohol reading of .170 – more than three times the legal limit for driving – after being stopped by police on the Harefield Road about 4.30am on Monday, December 21.
Wagga police had received a number telephone complaints from Junee residents about a golf cart being driven around town.
They came across four men on a golf cart, which had no headlights.
Reynolds owned up to police that he was owner and driver of the cart and had been driving it for two hours to take his mates home after drinking at a hotel.
Reynolds’ solicitor, Stephen Groch, said the driving disqualification would cause great difficulties for the man because he would have to buy train tickets back from Sydney or Melbourne after driving a train there from Junee instead of share-driving a car with workmates.
He said that on the night in question, there was no public transport in Junee and the men thought riding the golf cart would be a quicker way to get home than walking.
Magistrate Anthony Murray said Reynolds had placed the men in considerable risk of harm.
