Car park baby makes a dramatic arrival

21 Jan, 2010 09:32 AM
CODY William Butt doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

For the seven-day-old a quiet nap is just the

ticket, but everyone else can’t stop talking about the little boy dubbed the “car park baby”.

Making a dramatic entrance into the world last Thursday, Cody took his proud mother Angela Beckingham and father Clinton Butt by complete surprise, making the location of his birth the family car.

Following a long labour with her first daughter, Montana, Ms Beckingham believed she had plenty of time to get to the hospital after she went into labour 11 days premature.

After packing an overnight bag for her daughter and organising a babysitter, the parents-to-be got into the family car 30 minutes after labour started to make the journey to Wagga.

But about quarter of the way to Wagga, Ms Beckingham’s contractions picked up pace.

By the time they hit the Calvary Hospital car park there was no time left.

Cody decided 12.55pm was the time to be born and he wasn’t going to wait until his mother made it to the maternity ward.

“Clinton just grabbed him and put him onto me,” Ms Beckingham said.

“It all happened so quickly. I was a little worried because he wasn’t crying, but then he started.”

Shocked by the event which had unfolded, Mr Butt flagged down a passer-by, saying they had just had a baby and a short time later Calvary midwives were at the car to ensure both mum and bub were doing well.

“The midwives were excellent. They cut the cord and got me into a wheelchair. It was just brilliant.”

With midwives unable to remember another baby being born under similar circumstances, Ms Beckingham said her son quickly earned the nickname, Car Park Baby, which will no doubt be heard again with every birthday.

Due to the quick arrival, the parents didn’t get the chance to notify their friends and family Ms Beckingham had gone into labour, instead, they made calls to announce the birth.

“Everyone was in shock. The congratulations have been belated because everyone couldn’t believe what had happened,” Ms Beckingham said.

“We didn’t have the time to say we were in labour.”

Now home in Junee the family is enjoying time together.

Cody weighed 7lb 7oz and is a little brother for Montana, 19 months.
