A TEAM of Riverina line dancers is the toast of Tamworth after being named club of the year at the 18th Australian Line Dance Championships at the weekend.

Twelve competitors from Junee-based Bandits Line Dance hit the floor during the Tamworth Country Music Festival held from January 17 to 22, proving a formidable force in a range of categories.

After a tough year of competition, during which the team took home a staggering 78 gold medals, the Bandits were took the title of club of the year and handed the Australian Line Dance of the Year shield.

Bandits teacher and self-confessed line dance addict Lorraine Summerell praised her pupils for their dedication and said she was thrilled with the group’s win.

“We seriously kicked butt,” she said.

“The whole team worked extremely well together, they have worked hard all year for this and they really deserve it.”

The Bandits team was praised by judges for having such an experienced and committed group of four instructors, being a dedicated team, being a family-oriented group and for actively promoting line dancing in the Riverina and country regions.

Despite being based in Junee, members come from as far away as Wagga, Temora, Griffith and Tumut. The group includes men, women and children of all ages.

Taking out one of the most prestigious wins at the Tamworth championships were brother and sister duo Ben Summerell and Jessie Riethmuller, who claimed victory in the open duo category.

The pair took home impressive open duo buckles for its win, only two of which have been awarded in Australia.

Bandits classes resume at the Junee Ex-Services Club on Thursday, February 11, at 6.30pm in the auditorium.

Beginners are strongly encouraged to come along.
