85 people attend dawn service to pay respects

29 Apr, 2010 12:01 PM
THE rain held off long enough to allow Bethungra residents a gorgeous morning for a dawn service to mark Anzac Day.

Around 85 people gathered in Memorial Park to pay

their respects to the fallen and those who were lucky to return.

Integrated Service Peoples Association of Australia president Robert Bak officiated at the ceremony, speaking on the meaning of Anzac Day, why it is special to Australians and on the origins of the dawn service.

The minister conducting the service was rural chaplain Reverend Ron Westbrooke of Cootamundra, who is a member of Chaplaincy Australia.

Many in attendance were pleased to see the return of bugler Steve Belling, for the first time in a number of years sounding the Last Post for the community.

Members of the catafalque party from RAAF Wagga Base, Forest Hill, were in attendance for the service.

These included four RAAF members and two navy members.

Children attending the dawn service were presented with special Anzac Day stickers to wear.
